JOSS ready to go to sea.

New Tread Master Decking in 2000: Click on the image to the left to open a new window with a larger picture of Cheoy Lee JOSS'. In preparation for a Southern trip JOSS' decks and cabin top were awlgripped and Tread Master non-skid mats were cut and placed appropriately. The result is a clean function deck that does not absorb heat and has no leaks.


JOSS Main Mast

Standing Rigging: JOSS' has a very heavily built double spreader rig on the main mast and a single swept back spreader rig on her mizzen. Raytheon ST-60 wind instruments are located at the top of the main mast along with a "windex"; VHF antennae and mast head light. The mast head is also equipped with a spinnaker "crane" to make flying the chute simpler. The mizzen mast holds the radar radome.

JOSS' standing rigging and terminal ends were all replaced in 2003 on both the main and mizzen masts. She is equipped with heavy Norseman turnbuckles and 5/8" stainless steel rigging on the main mast and 3/8" stainless steel rigging on the mizzen.


JOSS Main Mast Running Rig

Running Rigging: JOSS' running rigging is all in excllent shape include sheets; halyards and blocks. All of the original Cheoy Lee blocks have been replaced with Harken ball bearing blocks including rigging for the main sheet, mizzen and roller furler blocks. The "manual" Cheoy Lee main sheet traveller has been replaced with a Harken ball bearing traveller which includes port and starboard adjustment adjustment lines. JOSS also is equipped with snatch blocks for running the spinnaker and a full set of spinnaker sheets.


Winches

Winches: JOSS is equipped with a pair of Self-Tailing Barient #32 winches as her primary head sail winches. The sheets run through large Harken ball bearing turning blocks. Self Tailing winches are also available in the cockpit for trimming the main sheet and controlling the furling jib. The main halyard winch is wire and has a friction brake. The mizzen halyard uses a standard non-self-tailing winch.


406Mhz EPIRB

Safety/Comfort: JOSS has a deep; comfortable; dry cockpit with lots of handholds including a "sissy bar" around the pedestal. She is equipped with jack lines for going foward when necessary. Her mast is surrounded by a large sissy bar making doing work at the mast in even the roughtest conditions an easy task. JOSS is also equipped with a 6 person AVON liefraft mounted to the port side of the forward companionway. Just inside the aft companionway is a 406Mhz EPIRB.

Ventilation:JOSS has fantastic ventilation with a large opening hatch in the forpeak; two small and one large opening hatche in the main salon; a large companionway hatch in the galley; and a large companionway aft. JOSS also has a number of small opening ports along the cabintop and side of the hull further allowing air circulation. She is also equipped with 3 large dorades for scooping air when the hatches cannot be opened.

Screens: All of JOSS' opening hatches; ports; companionways and dorades are equipped with screens allowing excellent ventilation in even the most severe mosquito conditions.
