Cheoy Lee 48' JOSS
Regrigeration
Way Cool: Cheoy Lee Joss has "first class" refrigeration.
Joss has two independent "holding plate" refrigeration systems. On average,
you charge the plates (ie cool them down) once a day during the genset run.
Both systems were built and professionaly installed
by SeaFrost the premier marine refrigeration manufacture.
Cheoy Lee Joss' large refrigeration and freezer boxes were completely
"gutted" and reinsulated with high "R" foam in 2000.
Capacity! A lot! We often went a month or longer on food from the fridge and
freezer. This is a real bonus if you are in the Las Aves reef about 60 miles off
the coast of Venezuela with no company for weeks at a time. It's nice not to have
to eat fish for every meal.
The main system is based around the SeaFrost BG 1000 compressor. This is a water cooled compressor
with a large capacity. It cools quickly and efficiently either under or shore power or through power
from Joss' 8KW Northern Lights Genset. This is the system you always run when cruising. You run this
system during your normal battery charging cycle of the genset.
The smaller system is a small 110 volt air cooled system which can be run either on shore power or
battery power. We often ran the small system while motoring, to keep the fridge cold and the
freezer frozen. This eliminated the need for running the genset after a long day of motoring.
We are often asked why bother with the "little guy." Simply, because you can leave the boat on
shore power in a marina for an extended period of time (ie visiting inland waterfalls in Venezuela or
hanging out inland in mexico for a week or two) without having to leave the large water cooled system
running while you are away (or throwing your food away).
Also, we always lived on the boat while it was hauled in differnt yards all over the Caribbean.
The "little" refrigeration plugged into show power allowed us to have full refrigeration and freezing even
"on the hard." This is a huge convenience when you are hauled. What could be better.
